One down, one to go

Yesterday was the Rim Country Challenge 1/2 marathon & 5K. Here is a breakdown of our nice little weekend.

Friday afternoon we get to Globe and drop the kids off at Grandma Susan's house. We stay for a short visit and leave for Payson. Once there, check in to hotel. (Note to self: DO NOT let McKay pick out hotel again.) We head over to feast on the pre-race spaghetti dinner, then hop on over to Walmart to pick up some morning snacks, warmer clothes for the morning and a few items for Paxton's birthday next weekend. Get back to hotel to relax and call it a night.

Race morning was so cold, it was in the 60's, I was freezing. Spencer thought it was nice with a slight chill. For most of the day I was 3 layers deep on top and 2 layers on bottom. This is pre-race

Spencer's brother/S-I-L : McKay & Brandi

Getting ready for the 1/2, each one is thinking about their race strategy. Spencer had 2 goals.
1) Come in under 2 hours
2) Beat younger brother McKay
Here is a quick history: Spencer- Trains alot and prepares well (ie. in Sept. ran 76 miles total), longest run in prep for this-11 miles. Tries to carb load in a healty way days before an event. Is better at sprints and quick twitch muscle activities.
McKay- Is a natural runner and does well in distant events. (He told us..)longest run in prep to this was 7 miles. Runs: not that often. Dinner before race, triple cheese burger, morning of: muffin and red bull.

Right before this picture was snapped I heard McKay tell Brandi, "I have no idea how to pace myself." I relay this to Spencer and we have a good laugh!

At the start of the race

In the meantime, while these 80+ people are out exerting themselves through the streets of Payson, with some good hills thrown into the coarse, the 5K is getting started. After shedding all my warm layers, I ran with a few people we know from Oracle and Payson. It was a fun and casual run and the weather seemed perfect while running.
And here are the results...
I ended up finishing 35th out of 85 5Kers. And somehow placed 3rd in my age group, so I got a medal. Woohoo! Yes, there were more than 3 runners in my age group. There were 10.

Frustration set in for Spencer as McKay finished 1.5 minutes before him, so that goal was shot. He did however make his other goal and finished at 1:59:30. McKay paced off Spencer for the first 7 miles and then slowly pulled ahead. It is funny to hear Spencer tell it as he would keep checking over his should to see if McKay was still there, and he always was, just lurking. He would zig to one side of the road and McKay would follow. He'd zag to the other side and...McKay would follow.

All in all it was a good trip. Now it's time to focus on my upcoming ride.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one going bald.

That's funny that you had a chuckle about McKay not knowing how to pace himself.

Good luck on your bike ride, did you guys ever ride later that day?
